New York Fashion Week Day Four

ROw 4 ROw 1 ROw 2

Simplicity has been part of The Row‘s appeal. The vision of the Olsen twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley, was a call for decency against the fashion world’s vulgarity. But when does the ‘discreet’ look turn cult-like and monastic?

There were some lovely, gentle pieces in Monday’s show – especially when fine fabrics were wrapped across the bust, giving a womanly touch.  Or when materials had a surface interest, as with a dress woven golden yellow, like the sun streaming into the downtown loft where the show was held. The colours, such as chartreuse and rust, were subtle and beautiful. But some outfits were prim, hiding female sexuality. However tactile the fabrics, who wants to be dressed nun-like, as in a fashion cloister?

The Olsen twins proved in the early days of the brand that they understand the concept of low-key luxury, and will be able to take the message forward.
